Environment and Natural Resources

As per Article 48 (DPSP), "the state shall Endeavour to protect and improve the environment and to safeguard the forests and wildlife of the country" and Article 51-A (fundamental duties), "it shall be the duty of every citizen of India to protect and improve the natural environment including forests, lakes, rivers and wildlife and to have compassion for living creatures.”

India is party to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Prior to the CBD, India had different laws governing the environment. The Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 protected the biodiversity in the nation. The National Forest Policy of 1988 had conservation as its fundamental principle. Additionally, the government passed the Environment (Protection) Act 1986 and Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act 1992 for preservation and protection of biodiversity.
